YouTube Monetizing Short Films With 45% Revenue Share

YouTube creators will soon be able to monetize Shorts as the company announces plans to expand monetization in the coming months.

YouTube announces that short films will soon be monetized and content creators will get 45% of view revenue.

This is an important update for monetized content creators.

Unlike long videos, which allow content creators to generate ad revenue, short videos have no shortcuts to monetization.

YouTube has a “Shorts” fund that gives creators money for popular videos. However, this is not the same as a residual income stream.

In addition to monetizing short films, YouTube is expanding the eligibility criteria for the YouTube Partner Program. This allows more content creators to qualify for long and short content monetization.

YouTube Shorts Monetization

Beginning early 2023, creators in the YouTube Partner Program will be eligible to monetize video Shorts.

This allows content creators to monetize ads that appear between videos in the short film feed.

YouTube adds ad revenue to feed shorts and pays creators at the end of the month.

Of the total amount distributed to creators, they keep 45% of the proceeds, which is distributed based on their share of the total short film views.

It’s an interesting approach to paying developers that encourages the whole community to support.

The more ad revenue generated during the month, the more everyone gets.

On paper, that sounds like a smart way to get the YouTube community to support Shorts, and that’s exactly what the company needs to do to stay ahead of competitors like TikTok.

Unlike the Shorts fund, YouTube says this revenue-sharing model is designed for long-term sustainability:

“We expect the majority of our Shorts Fund recipients to earn more money under this new model, which was built for long term sustainability. Instead of a fixed fund, we’re doubling down on the revenue sharing model that has supercharged the creator economy and enabled creators to benefit from the platform’s success.”

YouTube Expanding Partner Program Eligibility

To benefit from Shorts monetization, YouTubers must first be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program.

To attract more video artists to partner programs, YouTube is introducing new selection criteria.

Starting as early as 2023, creators can sign up for the YouTube Partner Program by reaching the threshold of 1,000 subscribers and 10 million short views in 90 days.

This change allows content creators to qualify for the affiliate program even if they don’t post long videos.

When this change takes effect, YouTube will retain its existing criteria of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of views.

Lastly, YouTube says it will lower the qualification threshold for fan funding by early 2023, allowing creators who aren’t in the affiliate program to make money from viewer purchases.
