Want to have a voice at big events? Isioma Odita’s Twitter account manager shared some tips.

From entertainment shows to sports and television, Twitter is where people talk about what’s going on. Here are six exclusive tips for making the most of the conversations taking place on Twitter at major events and occasions.

Plan Well Ahead

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to plan well in advance for special events. If you are planning a major activation around an event, we recommend planning 2-4 months in advance, depending on the event.

This ensures you have enough time to approach your content strategically and successfully connect with your audience. It may also help brands to increase their Twitter followers.

Top Tip: Make a calendar of moments and events you want to connect with right through the year to keep things organized. If you’re curious about other events of the year, check out Twitter Connect calendar.

Research Top Tweets From Last Year

Want to have a voice but don’t know what a “good” tweet looks like? A pro tip for figuring out what the perfect tweet looks like is to use last year’s event #hashtags.

For example, if you want to be active at the Emmys, you can search for #Emmys2021 or #Emmy in the Twitter search bar and filter the results by “top tweets” to see some of the best-performing tweets.

Insiders: Across five major live events in the US and UK in 2019-2020, people spent +22% more time on Twitter compared to leading competing platforms.

Apply Organic And Paid Strategies

Big brands with huge success on Twitter run both paid and organic strategies.

Organic Tweets help your brand connect with your followers, while Twitter Ads help you increase your brand reach and awareness.

A great way to engage organically with your audience is to create a Twitter poll. Surveys can help you:

  • Get an idea of how your audience feels about the upcoming event.
  • Track engagement based on the number of votes received in polls
  • Be a little more engaging

Some question ideas include asking which artist you think will win a particular award/event, a burning trivia question, or what your followers are most looking forward to.

For a paid effort, a product like Amplify Pre-Roll can be a great way to take advantage of events. This gives you the opportunity to place your branded videos with different publishers.

In fact, using Twitter Amplify to connect with what’s going on resulted in +68% campaign awareness and +24% news associations.

Weave In Targeting

Incorporate relevant targeting when setting up Twitter Ads. Twitter have different types of targeting features on Ads Manager, but two features are most relevant during events are keyword targeting, and follower targeting.

For keyword targeting, it is important that you include #hashtags that are relevant to the event you are trying to target. The more #hashtags you add in, the more recommendations the “recommended” tool generates.

It’s also recommended that include Twitter handles of brands that are similar to yours using follower look-alike targeting. It may help you to reach out more relevant people.

Start Buzzing Before The Event

Before the event, it’s important to tweet about it. You can generate buzz and engage with your followers by tweeting memes or GIFs, creating Twitter polls to find out what people think, or hosting a Twitter section.

A good time to start creating buzz around an event is 1-3 weeks, depending on the development of the conversation on the platform.

Join the Conversation In Real Time

During the event, you want to make sure that you are part of the conversation. To do this, follow the trending tab as well as the official #hashtag of the event.

Tweet in real-time to show people that your brand is following the event, just as they are. You can also connect with other brands by tweeting about the event. This can be a great way to create humor and engagement.

Twitter is where people turn when events happen. Join the conversation, build your cultural relevance, and experience the power of connection on Twitter firsthand.
