We all want fast link building results. Find out which factors influence link building and when positive change can be expected.
This is almost a standard question: SEO clients want to know how quickly they will see results from their link building efforts.
They want positive change as soon as possible, and that makes sense—a lot of time, work, and money go into building quality links. Realistically, it can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months for your site’s visibility to change.
It also helps to consider some of the important factors that affect the effectiveness of link building.
Let’s take a look at these factors and some examples of how fast link building pays off across different niches.
6 Factors That Have An Effect On The Efficiency Of Link Building
I’ve noticed these factors in my experience building links for various companies, but results will vary from case to case.
Let’s describe these factors that affect the effectiveness of link building in more detail.
1- Specific Site Authority
Domain Rank (DR) is a metric that shows how many backlinks a website receives from trusted sources. In general, the higher the DR, the higher the site’s trust score.
You can check your website’s DR using tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, MOZ, and Majestic.
Sites that initially have good DR will see results faster.
The lower the DR of the site, the longer you will have to wait for the links created to bring about positive change. But it also varies niche to niche.
Typically, the DR shouldn’t be less than 60 for B2B brands and 30 for B2C companies. If your domain ranks lower, you will have to wait longer for the results.
In essence, websites with good online authority can have more chances of getting even higher rankings.
2- Positive And Negative Traffic Trends
Simply put, positive trends accelerate the impact of a link building campaign, while negative trends can hurt results in the short term.
Google tracks momentum and prioritizes resources that show a steady growth trend.
When a website has a negative traffic trend, it can be difficult to return to the starting point of growth for reasons that affect the relevance and credibility of the website.
3- Brand’s Popularity
One of the deciding factors in link building is whether the website you are linking to is a sign of authority or not.
A useful indicator for this is the percentage of brand traffic the website receives.
You can check this with a tool like Semrush.
4- Page Type
Usually, links to content pages bring positive results faster than commercial pages.
In general, commercial sites target only a few keywords, which greatly reduce your chances of success.
Also remember that Google search prefers content pages.
5- Level Of Competition In A Given Niche
For example, in the B2B space, link building is very popular, so just using this strategy to grow your website may not be enough. You need to combine that with producing quality content and growing your brand.
But if you’re from the B2C space, link building can be your competitive edge.
6- Monthly Budget And Total Link Building
The average cost per connection across industries varies. For example, Ahrefs found it at around $350, while Siege estimated it at around $500.
However, the cost of a link depends on how authoritative a website is. For example, a link to a site with an Ahrefs domain score of 50 and organic traffic of 2,000 per month is not the same as a link from a site with DR 80 and organic traffic over 100,000.
Therefore, link building agencies often charge different prices based on website domain ranking and organic traffic.
Based on that, a good starting point might be $3,000 in monthly expenses and a total budget of $30,000.
However, you may need to invest at least $10,000 per month in some niches to start seeing results.
And it’s always good to be realistic about your unique situation and focus on finding the right keywords instead of trying and failing your luck.
Which Factor Is The Most Important?
All these factors play important role in some way. However, it is important to link to branded websites that sell genuine products or services.
These branded sites have the maximum growth potential and the impact of building links to these sites will only increase over time.
