This update, the fourth update to Google Product Review, will take two to three weeks to roll out.

Google has started rolling out version four of its Product Reviews update, an update to its search ranking algorithm that aims to rank product review-related content across the web as most useful and helpful to searchers.

The first product ranking update was released on April 8, 2021, the second was released on December 1, 2021, the third was released on March 23, 2022, and now the fourth was released on July 27, 2022. The new update is called July 2022 Product Reviews.

Google announced this update on Twitter, citing the standard help document for writing product reviews.

Google Product Reviews Update.

Google Product Reviews Update aims to push review content beyond much of the standard information you see on the web. Google says it will advertise this type of product review in its search results.

Google doesn’t directly penalize low-quality product reviews that have “thin content that just sums up a variety of products.” However, if you provide such content and find that your ranking is dropping due to other content being promoted above yours, you will definitely feel penalized. Technically, according to Google, it’s not a penalty for your content; Google just rewards sites with more insightful content to view by placing it above yours.

Technically, this update should only affect product review content, not other types of content.

What’s new: Unlike the March Product Ratings update, nothing specific to the rating criteria appears to have changed with this update. Google might just update the algorithm and make some minor adjustments.

The rollout Time: This update will take “2-3 weeks,” Google said. This update and larger updates usually take a few weeks to roll out, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise. You should expect most of the rating volatility to occur in the early stages of this implementation.

What is affected? Google says this update may affect those which are “creating product reviews in any language” in the future, but Google says the initial release will be on “product reviews in English.” Google added that they have seen “positive effects” from this update in the past and the search company “plans to open product review support to more languages” in the future.

Please note that this update can be quite large, almost as big as a major update.

Previous tip for updating product reviews.

“The general focus is on providing users with content that offers in-depth analysis and original research, content written by experts or enthusiasts experienced in the subject,” Google said of the update. This is advice similar to the critical update recommendations mentioned above, but here is a list of “additional useful questions to consider in connection with product reviews”. Google recommends that your product reviews cover this area and answer this question. Write a review about your product…

  • If necessary, disclose product expertise?
  • Do you show how the product is physically or how it is used with unique content that goes beyond what the manufacturer provides?
  • Provide a quantitative measurement of how a product performs in different performance categories?
  • Explain what differentiate a product from its competitors?
  • Include comparable products to reflect or explain which product is best suited for a particular use or situation?
  • Do you discuss the pros and cons of a particular product based on research into it?
  • Explain how a product evolves from an earlier model or version to provide an upgrade, fix a problem, or help a consumer make a buying decision.
  • Identify the key product category decision factors and how does the product perform in those areas? For example, automated assessments can determine that fuel economy, safety and drivability are important decision-making factors and evaluate performance in those areas.
  • Describe the major design decisions of a product and their impact on users beyond what the manufacturer says?
  • Provide evidence such as images, audio, or other links to your own experience with the product to support your experience and validate the authenticity of your review.
  • Include links to multiple sellers to give readers the opportunity to shop from the retailer of their choice.

Google adds three new bullet points with new tips for the third version of this Product Review update:

  1. Are products rating updates relevant for comparative ratings and reviews? Yes Product review updates affect on all types of review content. The best practices we share also apply. However, due to the shorter nature of the leader boards, you may want to demonstrate expertise and emphasize authenticity in a more concise way. Citing relevant results and including original images from tests you run on your product can be a good way to do this.
  2. Are there any reviews recommending the “best” product? If you recommend a product as the best overall or the best for a particular purpose, be sure to tell the reader why you think the product is the best. What make this product unique from others on the market? Why is the product so well suited for the recommended purpose? Make sure to include the first-hand evidence.
  3. If I create a review that includes multiple products, do I have to review each product individually? Writing related product quality ratings can be effective, combined with detailed product reviews for each featured product. Writing both will ensure the leader board has enough useful content to stand on its own.

Not a Core Update.

Google has also previously said that product preview updates are not the same as major updates. This is an altogether a new update Google calls it Product Review Update. However, Google added that the advice originally given for the major update “to create quality content for them is also relevant here”. In addition to these recommendations, Google has provided additional guidance specifically for this update.

Why do we care?

If your site offers product review content, you should review the placements to determine if you were affected. Is your organic Google traffic increasing, decreasing, or staying the same?

In the long run, you should make sure that in the future you put more detail and effort into your product review content to make it unique and stand out from the competition on the web.

Additionally, those who were affected by the previous major update and who worked can be rewarded with this July 2022 Product Review update.
