Meta testing Secure Storage in Messenger, a new feature that lets you secure end-to-end encrypted chats.

Meta has also started testing automated end-to-end encrypted chat threads in Messenger and expanding on other features.

We all want to be assured our conversations with friends and family are private and secure. Meta works hard to protect your private messages and calls with end-to-end encryption on Messenger and Instagram by default.

On August 11th, Meta announced plans to test a new secure storage feature for your end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat backups, other updates, and tests to provide the best Messenger and Instagram experiences.

Secure Storage: End-to-End Encrypted Backup On Messenger

Your message history is critical, and end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations are currently stored on your device with that in mind, Meta is testing secure storage to back up these messages For instance, you misplace your phone or want to restore your message history to a new supported device.

As with end-to-end encrypted chats, secure storage means Meta has no access to your messages unless you report them to us.

Meta start testing secure storage on Android and iOS this week, but the feature isn’t yet available on, Messenger for desktop, or end-to-end encrypted chats.

More Updates: Testing End-to-End Encrypted Messages And Calls.

Over the next few weeks, Meta will start rolling out more tests and updates for our end-to-end encrypted chats, including:

Expanding Features And Surfaces:

Meta states that you want to experience the same features you enjoy in Messenger when using end-to-end encrypted chat. Very soon deleted messages will be synced to your other devices.

They will also begin testing the ability to cancel messages, reply to Facebook stories, and offer other ways to access your end-to-end encrypted messages and calls.

For example, Facebook plans to bring end-to-end encrypted calls to the Messenger Calls tab. End-to-end encrypted chats are also hands-free with Ray-Ban Stories (English only). This means that if you already have an end-to-end encrypted chat with someone, sending messages hands-free in Messenger for Ray-Ban Stories will be end-to-end encrypted.

Code Verify:

Meta’s new security feature, called “Code verify”, is an open source web browser extension available on Chrome, FireFox, and Microsoft Edge that automatically verifies code authenticity when you use

This allows you to verify the security effectiveness of Meta’s end-to-end encryption and demonstrates that your web code has not been tampered with or altered.

End-to-End Chats Encryption Testing:

This week Meta will start testing standard end-to-end encrypted chats between multiple people. If you’re in a test group, some of your most common chats may be end-to-end encrypted automatically, so you don’t need to sign up for the feature.

You will still have access to your message history, but any new calls or messages with that person will be end-to-end encrypted. You can still report a message to Meta if you think it violates their policies and Meta will review it and take appropriate action.

Removal Vanish Mode On Messenger:

There are currently two Messenger features in which viewed messages in an end-to-end encrypted chat automatically disappear.

Meta is removing vanish mode, but disappearing messages are still available in your end-to-end encrypted chat settings. In this mode, all messages disappear at the selected time after viewing them. Vanish mode chats on Instagram are not end-to-end encrypted and will remain available.

Extended Chat Feature Testing On Instagram:

Last year, Meta started a limited trial of end-to-end encrypted messages and calls on Instagram, and in February they expanded the trial to include adults in Ukraine and Russia.

Meta will be expanding their testing soon to include people in more countries and adding more features like group chats. The original test is only available for adults, but this extended test will be available to everyone.

If you’re in a test group, you’ll be asked if you want to start an end-to-end encrypted chat and you’ll be reminded how to report a message.

Meta stated in a post that it will continue to provide updates as it moves towards implementing end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls by default worldwide in 2023.
