SEO can help your writing portfolio be found by potential clients. This will make your portfolio easier to find on Google and other search engines.
I’ve always been a writer.
Since I learned to write pen to paper, I have written stories, poems, plays, and anything else that turns my imagination into words.
When I discovered blogging, I immediately realized that SEO and writing work well. It became clear that if I wanted readers to find my content, I needed to optimize for organic search.
Over time, I turned writing into a profitable business, and then into a full-fledged SEO career.
Along the way, I learned a few tricks to get a writing portfolio discovered by potential clients.
If you are a content writer or copywriter, use these SEO tips to make your writer portfolio easier to find online.
First, How Do You Create A Writing Portfolio?
There are many types of content portfolios. Actually, you don’t even need a website to present your work. You can use something as simple as a Google Drive folder to store samples of your content and share them with clients.
You can publish articles on LinkedIn.
You can even save your work as a PDF file and send it to potential clients.
However, if you want to put your portfolio in organic search, a website is probably the best way to do it.
This gives you the most flexibility in optimizing your content, getting referral traffic, linking to live samples, and more.
So in this article, I look at how you can use your website to post and link to specific examples of your published work.
1- Subscribe To The SEO Keyword Research Tool
You can count how many people (i.e. “users”) searched for a term, how competitive the term was, and whether other sites were targeting it.
Subscribing to SEO tools is very important as it gives you access to real data to inform your SEO strategy.
You will be capable of researching what keywords to target in your web page content and what topics to write about on your blog.
Moreover, you can use SEO tools to discover the keywords your competitors are targeting.
For example, you can search one of your competitor domains in an SEO tool, view their keywords, and apply them to your SEO strategy.
Most of these tools use a “freemium” model, where you can get many features for free.
Others have a monthly subscription fee.
Access to reliable SEO tools makes all the difference!
2- Plan And Launch Your Portfolio Website
If you already own a website, you can use SEO tools to choose the keywords to target on your existing web pages.
For instance, if you have a web page about SEO Content Writing Services, you may want to use the term “Content writing services or SEO Content Writing Services” (search volume of these keywords approximately : 720) in your page content, title, and description.
Follow this strategy for as many pages on your site as you need.
If you are building a new website, then you are in an excellent position to plan your content from scratch.
First, summarize all the services you offer.
Then use SEO tools to find keywords related to the service.
Here’s An Example Of A Sales Copywriter’s Portfolio Display:
- Home page: “sales copywriter” search volume is 170, “sales page copywriter” search volume is 50.
- Service pages: “sales copywriter” search volume is 110, “sales copywriter” search volume is 30.
- Service: Website copywriter: “Website copywriter” search volume is 390.
- Achievements: Email campaign: “Email Copywriter” search volume is 260.
Above you can see how each page compares to the relevant search term.
This ensures that you create and target content for terms with monthly search volume, and in turn gives you the ability to drive organic traffic to your pages.
Seocopywriting.com is a great example of a website with a landing page optimized for their services; for example SEO Writing Consulting and SEO Copywriting Services.
It also has a blog covering topics related to content.
This website can attract over 500 organic visits per month!
3- Create A Calendar And Blogging Strategy
The writing industry can be very competitive. With so many writers online, many of them target mostly the same keywords on their portfolio pages.
With this in mind, you need to be creative with your blog content to generate more organic traffic, and this is where your SEO tools come into play. I advise you never to give up when it comes to your blog.
Putting energy into content writing also allows you to cover topics that will drive traffic to your site.
That’s How To Do It:
- Go to the SEO tool of your choice and start searching for general topics related to “writing”, “authors”, “copywriting”, “content” and the like.
- Compile the list of search terms that appear in each category. Create a list of keywords that have search volume but low to moderate competitive value.
- Filter these keywords for keywords that are best answered in blog posts. For example, “how to write a comprehensive sales page” is a much better article topic than “sales page” or “blogger”.
- Download these keywords into a spreadsheet such as Google Sheets or Excel. Add a column where you consider blog titles that match your chosen keywords. A good title might be “how to write a sales page in 7 steps” for the example of the keyword above.
- Set a date when you want to write, optimize, and publish your blog articles. This will enable you to stay on calendar.
- After writing an article, add internal links to related service pages or contact pages on your site to encourage users to collaborate with you.
Remember, you want to create content that resounds to your audience.
So, as a writer, you probably don’t want to talk about “Thailand travel tips” or “best vacation recipes.”
Instead, you may want to write about how to choose a copywriter, where to find writers, tips for the best content, what content marketing is, etc.
4- Take Advantage Of LinkedIn Articles And Media
SEO strategy can take time, especially if you have a new or small website. I recommend using a platform that already has a lot of traffic to direct users to your own site.
Medium is a great platform that encourages everyone to publish content for free. You can write articles and then link them to your website.
Some of my articles on Medium have been read more than 10,000 times – far more than I get on my own blog.
The same goes for LinkedIn articles.
Your article will appear for your connections. You can then redirect users to related pages or posts on your own site.
This strategy can help you attract more users to your portfolio without having to wait for SEO to pay off.
5- Look For Guest Posting Opportunities
Guest posting is the most exciting option nowadays. You can guest post on other websites, especially on authority sites, to use their authority and traffic to your advantage.
In fact, I have clients who write live via guest posts on blogs, websites, and other online magazines.
Go after the other blogs related to your niche and offer to write for them.
For better access to quality sites, apply to be a contributor to more authority sites and publishers. Many webmasters allow you to link back to your website.
Guest posting can help you get quality backlinks to your website, which can improve your website’s SEO.
At the very least, many sites help market your content on their platforms and drive referral traffic to your site. Guest posting has many benefits, especially if your website isn’t generating a lot of traffic yet.
6- Optimize Your Google Business Profile Page
Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free medium that allows businesses to create online profiles and generate local organic traffic.
If you offer writing services to local clients, you may benefit from a list of Google business profiles.
For example, I have a Google Business Profile promoting my SEO and content writing services in my hometown of London.
Note that this listing will be associated with a physical address and phone number (you can use Google Numbers if you don’t want to use your personal number).
So if you are more personal then this might not be the way to go.
But if you’re happy with that visibility, an Optimized Google business profile listing can be a great way to generate leads and attract users to your author portfolio.
7- Join Writing Job Boards And Directories
While you are waiting for your website to start generating organic traffic, you can generate leads through popular writing job boards.
Sites like this function as a freelance marketplace, where people submit briefs, you apply for briefs, and then get paid to provide your services.
Many writers are generating a lot of business with these platforms – however, these platforms tend to pay less than you might charge as a direct contractor.
Expand Your Portfolio With SEO
SEO is one of the best ways to increase the online exposure of your author portfolio and generate organic traffic.
Combined with other methods like guest posting and submitting to author directories, your website can generate real leads.
The key to an effective SEO strategy is to use SEO tools to your advantage. This is the best way to get accurate data that tells you about the content you should have on your website.
You can then use this tool to uncover blog topics, research your competitors, and analyze your backlinks.
